This program offers effective behavioural intervention services for young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) who are at the severe end of the ASD spectrum. The program uses trained staff that may work with your child in your home, community or clinical centre to offer Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI). IBI is a treatment approach that breaks complex skills (like playing with toys, playing with other children, looking after ones self) into small, simple steps that are then taught to children through a variety of techniques. The intention of IBI is to improve the child's verbal and non-verbal communication skills, self-help skills, play skills, and socialization skills and is intended to enhance supports for children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. It will not eliminate access to or replace other services like Special Services at Home, child care or school. The services include the following:
Admission for this program is made following receipt of a written diagnosis from a Pediatrician, Developmental Pediatrician, Clinical Psychologist or Child Psychiatrist. Once the written diagnosis has been completed, a family member may call REACH Contact to refer their child. Within 6 weeks after the referral is received by the Developmental Unit, information is collected to assist with a decision about eligibility for the program. Is there a cost for this program?
