F.A.S.D. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder F.A.S.D. is a term describing a range of effects that can occur in children whose mothers drank alcohol during pregnancy. Effects may include physical, mental, behavioural and/or learning disabilities throughout an individual's lifetime.
The term F.A.S.D. encompasses: · Fetal Alcohol Syndrome/Fetal Alcohol Effects (FAS/FAE) · Alcohol Related Birth Defects (ARBD) · Alcohol-Related Neurodevelopment Disorder (ARND
Some characteristics/behaviours exhibited by individuals with F.A.S.D.: · features may include facial deformities · stunted physical and emotional development · does not understand danger · over reacts/under reacts to pain · memory and attention deficits; unable to sit still · difficulty learning new things/forgets skill already learned · resists change and prefers structured routines · needs reminders for basic activities at home, school or work · has difficulty sharing, waiting for a turn, following rules or cooperating · impulsive behaviour · poor problem-solving skills/unaware of consequences or actions · a failure to comprehend the concept of time · may have difficulty sleeping and/or eating · poor social skills, difficulty making and keeping friends, does not like to play alone · overly friendly and affectionate · difficulty understanding emotions · easily approached by strangers · may be aggressive and physical, unaware of harm to others or consequences · easily frustrated · hyperactive - requires supervision as a child · low self-esteem · difficulty coping with financial matters as an adult
Group Objectives: · to establish a safe environment to discuss experiences of living with an individual with F.A.S.D. · to reduce isolation by facilitating caregiver connections · to assist each other in becoming advocates · to develop skills that assist in understanding and managing the needs of an individual with F.A.S.D. · to provide a forum for resources and discussion
