Autism Spectrum Disorder (A.S.D.) Family Support Group The support group for families of children with A.S.D./Autism have been meeting monthly since 1997 at H-N REACH in Townsend. The group has been an excellent avenue for parents to share experiences, provide mutual support, discuss topics of common interest and begin new friendships.
What is Autism/A.S.D. Autism is a developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life. It is one of a family of disorders called Pervasive Developmental Disorders (P.D.D.).
P.D.D. Autistic Disorder Rett's Disorder Childhood Disintegrative Disorder Asperger's Disorder Pervasive Development Disorder not otherwise specified (N.O.S.)
General Impairments Autism is characterized best by three general impairments: 1. deviant social development 2. delayed and/or unusual language or communication, and 3. repetitive or ritualistic behaviour
Children with autism may show these general impairments to varying degrees
The Importance of Early Diagnosis Early detection leads to early diagnosis. Children who are diagnosed early can receive early intervention. People who work with children with autism have noticed significant differences among those who received and did not receive early professional intervention.
Early Intervention may decrease secondary symptoms such as destructive and self-aggressive behaviours.
